Backing up your data is an essential security measure since there are many ways in which your data can get corrupted. Though man people don’t bother since they think that backing up is a complicated process. For those who need a very simple backup tool, DriveImage XML fits the requirements perfectly. While other backup tools may offer tons of features and options, DriveImage XML offers to do a particular thing without confusing the user.

As far as backup tools go, DriveImage XML does not offer a ton of features. It is free for personal use, but the features offered by this tool seem too light even in comparison to some other free tools. It can backup only entire drive, not specific files or folders. The backup is stored as an XML file, so it can be read even by other tools. You can choose to save it as one large XML file or break it down into several different XML files smaller than 4 GB so you can write them to DVD. You will need to burn them to DVD manually as it does not support automatic backup to DVD. Also, it does not support incremental backups, that is, it cannot add new and modified information to existing backup and requires creating a whole new backup file. This can be a bit inconvenient, especially for regular backup schedule. You can use Windows Task Scheduler to create a schedule.

DriveImage XML supports compressing the backup to save some space. It can lock down a volume for creating a backup and preventing modifications during the process. If you prefer, it can also use Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) in order to prevent locking a volume and create a backup while the volume is in use. It can browse an existing backup and extract only specific files. If you need to restore during boot, you will need to create a third party recovery disc which supports XML backup. Another limitation is that DriveImage XML does not support restoring the backup to a drive that is smaller than the original one. Though it supports command line operation so that you can use it from batch files. This makes it a useful tool for power users who regularly automate tasks by making batch files.
