Process Monitor is a free software developed by Microsoft that can detect all successful and failed attempts at editing your specific Windows registry code as well as provide users with the software IDs of all programs that may be running in the background. It can even display what commands these programs are currently executing and the manner in which they are utilizing files and DLLs. This allows the user to easily detect for errors, viruses and more. Process Monitor includes a greater amount of features than the Windows included Task Manager.
Similarly to Windows Task Manager, Process Monitor can display processes, and eliminate or start them up again fairly easily. Its new and improved features over the Windows built-in application such as the process tree, allows users to track down what exactly is causing their personal computers to slow down, determine what is causing a process to fail during launch, and allows for an extensive troubleshooting of the issue. However, unlike Windows Task Manager, it is a bit more complex to use in comparison so new users might take some time to get accustomed to it to be able utilize Process Monitor to its full potential.
The process tree also comes included with the ability to allows users to not only see all programs related to specific processes, but also provides a way to eliminate all of them at once instead of just one process at a time. It makes sure that the ended process will not randomly come up again as all related files are now completely disabled. If you’re not interested in removing the process completely from your directory, Process Monitor can instead suspend the process which temporarily disables it. The process can easily be start up again in a matter of seconds. Lastly, the program also helps identify what program a certain process is related to with a simple click.
You don’t even need to be next to your computer to use the program. Just turn on “capture events” while running the program and leave your computer on to see what exactly happens during your absence. Process Monitor will display everything you need to know about which process started, what started it, what did it do and which files it affected in a detailed report which will assist you in determining the source of any random slow-downs or lag spikes affecting your computer. The program is also great at troubleshooting crashes alongside other programs. Simply launch Process Monitor in the background and run the program you believe to be faulty. If it crashes, Process Monitor will tell you exactly what files or registry keys it was searching for which can help significantly in being able to troubleshoot the crash issue and replace any faulty files within the program.
