Often times when cleaning up junk in Windows you will come across certain files that will refuse to get deleted. These files can present errors such as ‘Cannot delete files, access denied’, ‘The file you’re trying to modify is being used by Windows or other application’, ‘Path too deep’ or ‘Filename or extension is too long’. Sometimes it is as obvious as closing a certain program, but sometimes it can often be annoying trying to fix the cause and getting rid of the stubborn junk file.

One of the most popular tools to delete stubborn files is Unlocker. It is a small tool at just 216 kb and it is also available in a portable version. When you install Unlocker on your computer, it integrates into the Windows Explorer right-click context menu. When you right-click on any file, you can see the Unlocker option. Click on it, and if the file is not locked by any process, then it opens a dialogue box saying that the file is unlocked and gives you the option to delete, rename, move or do nothing with the file.

If the file is locked, it opens up a different dialogue box. Files are usually locked because they are being accessed by process handles. Sometimes this may be a system process such as Windows Explorer, an application that may have been using the file and crashed, or a malicious program such as a virus. Unlocker shows the processes whose handles are locking the file. You can either select some of them and click the Unlock button, or just click Unlock all. This should free the file from the process and allow deletion or modification. You can try if it worked by selecting the desired action from the drop-down list at the bottom left. If it doesn’t work, you can try killing the process. Be advised that killing system processes or any applications can cause system instability or loss of any unsaved work. Once you kill the processes that were using the file, you should be able to proceed and delete the file.
